As the Footscray Lacrosse Club Men’s and Women’s State League teams head into the second half of the season both teams have firmly proven to the rest of the league that this year they are a completely different team than in years past. Through the midway point of the 2017 lacrosse season both the Men’s and Women’s teams seem to be clicking in all areas of the game, with the Men’s team currently holding an undefeated record of 10 wins and 0 losses as well as the Women’s team holding an unblemished record of 8 wins and 0 losses.
Through the first half of the season the Men’s team has shown the league it means business with convincing wins over MCC, Caulfield, Surrey Park, and more recently the 19-17 win over Malvern to remain at the top of the leader board. Leading the men’s team in points through the first half of the season is Anthony Biscardi with 34 points on the season. Not only is he leading the team in overall points but he is also leading the team in both goals and assists with 26 goals and 8 assists on the year so far. Speaking with Coach Max Madonia about the season thus far and what his expectations are for the second half of the season. Max thinks that it has been a good season so far but that the team can “pick it up” when it comes to playing consistent this season. Max says, “inconsistency of play and some bad luck with injuries have hindered us from playing up to our full potential thus far but I do like where we are headed”. One big plus to take away from the first half of the season has been the return of Peter Kwas at attack said coach Max as well as the input the international players have had saying, “the team seems to be meshing together nicely heading in to the latter half of the season”. As for the second half of the season Max has expectations of the team to start to play more and more consistent as well as staying healthy so that Footscray can have a full team of healthy players as they look to make a run in the second half of the season.
Our Women’s state league team is also heading in to the second half of the season on top with a recent 21-5 win over Williamstown Women. Sarah Mollison is leading the team in goals and assists with 32 goals and 12 assists as well as leading the team overall with 44 points on the year thus far. Having a conversation with women’s head coach Greg Mollison about his thoughts on the first half of the season he says, “we have had a great start to the first half of our season and you can’t ask for anything more than to go undefeated, but it’s not over yet and we still have some work to do if we want to be where we want to be at the end of the season”. Greg also went on to speak briefly about how hard his players have been training this year especially the Australian National Team players. Greg talked about how he sees how hard the team has been training the first half of the season and Greg credits the unblemished start to the season a direct connection to the hard work the girls have done training on and off the pitch. Asking Greg about his expectations after starting the season undefeated was that he does not expect to have a downward slope. He did mention that he hopes the senior players on the team keep up the hard work they have been doing the entire season so far, while some of the team leaves to play in the world championships. Hopefully the team can keep up its winning ways throughout the latter half of the season in hopes of bringing home the grand final trophy this year.
Come watch both teams this coming Saturday and Sunday as they look to keep their win streaks alive, with the men’s team playing Williamstown away at 2:45pm and the women’s team playing away at Caulifield at 3:00pm. It was great seeing all the juniors at the state league game this past weekend showing their support for their club as well as seeing most of them stay around for 6:00 o’clock rock. We look forward to seeing everyone this upcoming weekend supporting the teams as they head into the second half of their seasons.
