Footscray Lacrosse Club had a strong showing this past week at the 2017 ALA Maverick Challenge. There were six players that participated in the tournament, five with the Australian National team and Jordan Germershausen with the USA All-star team as well as Max Madonia who was the assistant coach for the USA team. The 5 players that represented Footscray on the Australian National team were Peter Kwas, Jeff Melsopp, Chris Plumb,
Jim Lawerson, and Tim Lane.
Above is a look at both the Gold and Green Australian teams which had a great weekend at the ALA Maverick lacrosse challenge. The Green squad finished the weekend with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss coming to Gold team on the weekend. The Green team had a great offense and was complemented nicely with a potent defense and as the tournament progressed, both sides of the ball improved. Representing Footscray on the Green team was Peter Kwas, Jim Lawerson, and Chris Plumb. All three of these players had a great tournament showing on the offensive side of the ball. The Green team placed third in the tournament after a convincing third place game win against the USA All-Stars team on Sunday morning. The Gold Team (also in this picture) finished the weekend with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses with both loses coming to the Japan National team and both games had a score of 8-7. There were only two Footscray players on the Gold team, Jeff Melsopp and Tim Lane. Both Tim and Jeff had very good tournaments on the defensive end with a couple of caused turnovers between them both as well as a handful of groundballs.
The USA All-Stars (shown above) was a team put together by Head coach Eric Jenny and assistant coach Max Madonia. The team consisted of American players that play in state leagues across Australia. Two Footscray players were chosen to play on the team them being Anthony Biscardi and Jordan Germershausen. Unfortunately, Anthony did not play in the event due to an injury. Jordan, the lone Footscray player on the team, played attack for the USA squad who did not have a win on the weekend. The team played well for a team coming together the day of the tournaments start.
Above is the Japan National Team that competed in the ALA Maverick Challenge. This team was a very disciplined side. They used a 10-man ride multiple times in all their games to catch their opponent off guard. The team ended the tournament with a 3 win and 1 loss record and came home with the championship title. The team played a tough game against the Gold Australian team eventually winning the game by a score of 8-7. We wish them the best of luck as they continue their training towards the World Games.
